How are Diesel Particulate Filters /DPF/?

Diesel particulate Filters exist primarily as an environmental measure. They catch most of the particulate matter emitted by diesel engines and can reduce

soot emissions by 85-100%. Because of this DPFs are increasingly common and are encouraged by legislation in many territories, such as Europe, Asia and the United States of America.

How does work the DPF

If we take a look at this picture, we can see how the DPF reduces soot emissions by burning away trapped particulate matter.

particulate matter…….exhaust gas reduce & harmless…………..converted to H2O and CO2

Emissions Flow———-Oxidising catalyst———–filter

This burning process is known as regeneration and will occur automatically when the filter almost is full. during this process exhaust gas temperatures are increased up to 900 celsius by the engine control system. During this process, the driver may notice:

-Slight change to the engine note, sound

-Slight decrease in fuel economy

This regeneration may not be able to take place under certain conditions which can cause problems for the vehicle if not resolved promptly.

Possible problems

Under specific conditions cannot take place the regeneration.

When the engine operating temperature to low and driving a short distance. When the vehicle speed is too low and the stops and starts driving, moving through traffic

To make the driver aware of these potential problems in good time a warning system is in place for the DPF. Under certain conditions, this may also be combined with the engine warning lamp.

Some fault problem is possible like fault temp sensor, blocked DPF, oil level calculation is on max, some other fault, and driving conditions but the warning light is illuminated. So important what engine oil is put in, the dealer normally uses 5W30 C3. The low ash means is when the engine oil is burning less solid material is left behind, so protect the DPF system.

Look around the various warning lights.

A DPF replacement is an expensive repair cost, so it is important that you explain these to you.

DPF lamp ON engine lamp OFF: regeneration of the DPF is needed, drive with a warm engine at least 25 MPH far a total of 20 minutes.

DPF lamp flashing engine lamp OFF: engine oil needs to be changed and oil level calculation reset, drive soon to the nearest service point. More info here: Mitsubishi Outlander 4n14 engine oil level is too high reset P252F DPF on.

DPF lamp flashing engine lamp ON: looks too much particulate matter in the DPF avoid driving at high loads speed if not in the limp mode, drive soon as possible to the nearest service point.

DPF lamp OFF/ON engine lamp ON: Has the problem been detected in other systems so drive the nearest service point if not in the limp mode.

If you feel trouble with the DPF make sure you visit the right service point otherwise failing diagnostic or repair probably cost you huge money.
